![]() Ben and business partner, Englishman Zeman McCreadie, have spent the last seven years exploring the roads less travelled that weave through the Cambodian countryside. "As Cambodia has become more and more peaceful, more and more roads have opened up. As soon as a new route opened up we'd ride it," explains Laffer. Ben was the first person to legally ride his Suzuki DR250 from the capital of Cambodia Phnom Penh, overland to Bangkok in neighbouring Thailand. He came back via the world famous temple complex of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap saying: "On the Cambodian side, ninety percent of the trip was done on dirt roads. Although as the crow flies the distance is less than six hundred kilometres, the journey there took the best part of two days. The riding was excellent, the countryside beautiful and the fact that I was the first person to do this trip made it quite a buzz". Ben and Zeman have over 14 years of Cambodian experience between them and have lived in Asia for most of their lives. Both are enthusiatic off-roaders and lead all the tours themselves. Says Zeman, "The tours are very much hands on with myself and Ben getting stuck right into to the action. We certainly wouldn't want to miss any opportunity to ride the countryside and meet riders from all over the world. Due to the unpredicatable nature of riding roads in Asia, all groups are lead by Ben with myself taking up the rear. Overtaking Ben is not recommended, but when you see the speed that he rides you probably wouldn't want to try it anyway!" "When we first arrived in Cambodia the only dirt bikes were old Honda XL185s left over from the days of the UN. Ben was one of the first people to import a proper dirt bike and later brought motocross bikes here. We have both supported and entered the Mild Seven sponsored motocross competitions held all over the country since there inception in 1996. We've even had a bash at the Supercross events that Mild Seven have held in the national stadium. "Any spare moment we've had left over we have spent blasting out into the countryside, exploring every corner of this facinating country that really is best appreciated from the saddle of a dirt bike. Now we want to share our experiences with other dedicated dirt bike riders." "And Unlike other counties in the region there is little or no government restrictions on when and where we can ride. Angkor Dirt Bike Tours is an independent company that does not require government supervision, such as you would find in Vietnam for example. We don't have to file routes with anyone, we just jump on the bikes, crank up the back-up truck and go." more | Tours... |
